A Journey of Resilience
The Kirby’s journey began with excitement as they anticipated welcoming twins to their family. At 20 weeks into their pregnancy, the family learned of complications with one of their twins, Kaylen. By 25 weeks, Kaylen was diagnosed with hydrops, a condition that brought immense challenges and uncertainty. They knew that every decision would not only affect Kaylen but also her twin sister, Kamdyn.
At 30 weeks and 4 days, an emergency c-section was performed because Kamdyn no longer had room to grow. The delivery room was filled with an expert medical team dedicated to giving both girls the best chance possible. Kamdyn’s first cry was a moment of relief and joy, while Kaylen entered the world silently, already in the fight of her life. Despite receiving extensive care, Kaylen passed away after fighting nine courageous days in the NICU.
Kamdyn remained in the NICU for 63 days as a "feeder and grower," facing scares with NEC and severe reflux. Every milestone during her stay, from being held on day four to celebrating Easter and Mother’s Day in the NICU, was cherished. Today, Kamdyn is a healthy, vibrant six-year-old who loves talking about her sister in heaven and how their family helps "boo-boo babies."
To honor Kaylen’s memory, Angela, Callie, Kamdym and Kase created “Kaylen’s Fight” to support other NICU families. The Kirby’s story is one of love, resilience, and a commitment to helping other families navigate the challenges of the NICU. Kaylen’s legacy lives on through the family’s work, ensuring her life continues to make a meaningful impact.
We extend a heartfelt thank you to the Kirby family for bravely sharing their journey and stepping up as the 2025 Ambassador Family!
