SIGMA GAMMA RHO SORORITY INC.

Message from the International Grand Basileus Rasheeda Liberty

WHY WE MARCH

Each year, 1 in 10 babies are born prematurely in the U.S. Premature babies face serious lifelong medical and developmental issues, and it’s time to change those outcomes.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (SGRho) is proud to be a national partner with the March of Dimes. Every year, we join together as one Sigma family of Sorors, Philos and Rhoers to participate in March for Babies to raise funds that are used to sponsor research, provide education on prematurity to the communities that we serve as well as medical services and support to families with premature babies.

Join us in “Walking Together for Stronger Healthier Babies” by clicking the "Join This Team" button. If you can’t walk with us, we encourage you to still show your support by donating to our team. For members and affiliates, be sure to search for your respective chapter team.

Lillian (Lily) Grace

Her Story

Lillian “Lily” Grace was expected to make her entrance into the world in January 2019; however, due to a pregnancy condition called pre-eclampsia, which is marked by high blood pressure and hyper-tension, her mother, Soror Latresha Olaosebikan, underwent an emergency caesarean in November 2018 at 31 weeks. Lily was born weighing three pounds and needed to spend five weeks in the Neonatal Care Unit of Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Soror Olaosebikan considers this time in the NICU as a blessing in disguise. Through the supportive effort of the March of Dimes, she received care, attention and education that was necessary to guide her through the proper and successful daily care and breastfeeding of Baby Lily.

In result, Lily was looked after, loved on and encouraged to thrive by nurses and doctors who offered the most gentle patient care imaginable. Nurses also sang and read stories to Lily to increase her alertness and cognition - and when it was time to ring the final bell on Lily's last day, each member of her care team lined up in parade-like fashion to wish her a healthy and happy farewell.

Today, Lillian Grace is a bright and active 2-year-old, and the Olaosebikan family attributes the success of her health journey to the March of Dimes and its mission to lead the fight for healthier babies.
