The Powers Family

Kellie Powers

On March 8, 2018, Kellie Powers arrived at South Shore Hospital for a routine ultrasound. She had been feeling unwell, but it was initially thought to be a virus. That morning, her symptoms worsened, and after an evaluation, doctors discovered she was 7 centimeters dilated—already in labor at just 31 weeks. Despite efforts to delay delivery, her twin daughters arrived early on March 9. Peyton was born at 3:54 AM, weighing 3 pounds 10 ounces, followed by Paige at 4:01 AM, weighing 3 pounds 9 ounces. After a brief moment together, they were taken to the NICU, where they faced challenges such as breathing support, feeding tubes, and jaundice treatment. Kellie developed postpartum complications, including a severe infection requiring extended hospitalization. After 39 and 42 days in the NICU, Peyton and Paige were finally discharged. Kellie and Jeff became dedicated supporters of the March of Dimes. However, three years later, their son Luke was born at just 23 weeks and 6 days. Despite a courageous fight, he passed away in their arms after developing a severe brain bleed. Determined to prevent another premature birth resulting in loss, Kellie underwent a transabdominal cerclage in 2023. When she became pregnant again, she was closely monitored, but at 24 weeks, her water broke. Hospitalized on bed rest, she defied the odds and remained pregnant for another eight weeks. On July 15, 2024, their son Jack was born at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He faced initial NICU challenges but was discharged after 25 days. Kellie again experienced postpartum complications requiring readmission. The Powers family has witnessed both the miracles and heartbreak of premature birth. Their unwavering support of the March of Dimes is rooted in their desire to fund research that can prevent other families from experiencing similar losses. They honor Luke’s memory by advocating for healthier pregnancies and stronger beginnings for all babies.
