Important Update

Our March for Babies celebration is still on, but it looks a little different! We are rapidly preparing for a new, virtualized event that will be fun and engaging for everyone. This change in format aligns with the newly released CDC guidance for large events, to help ensure the safety and health of our participants. More details on our new format to come soon!

Emmett Hoffman

In 2016, Amanda Hoffman was pregnant with her second child – another boy. Thrilled, yet cautiously optimistic after multiple miscarriages, things seemed to be going well – until they weren’t. 26 weeks and two days into her pregnancy, Amanda woke to realize her water had broken and she was having contractions. She checked into labor and delivery where she was administered magnesium sulfate in an attempt to suppress the contractions, and a steroid injection to help her baby’s lungs in case the contractions could not be stopped. She was told if she could remain pregnant for at least another 24 hours, she could receive the second steroid injection, which would drastically improve her baby’s outcome. Emmett had other plans, and was born a few hours later, weighing 1 lb. 14 oz. Emmett spent more than three months in the NICU, finally coming home two days after his original due date. Amanda describes it as the hardest three months of her family’s lives, with many scary episodes that had them wondering whether they’d ever get to bring him home. “Between a critical baby in the hospital and an energetic three-year-old at home, my husband and I were like ships passing in the night – each of us trading off caring for our toddler and trying to keep life as normal as possible for him, and spending as much time as we could with our baby,” Amanda recalls. “We didn’t know whether he would live or die – or if he did live, what his quality of life might look like.” Today, Emmett is a smart, energetic, and happy seven-year-old. It took many years of therapies and a whole team of specialists to get him to where he is today, but as the years have gone by, he’s slowly shed most traces of his early start. Looking at him now, you’d almost never even believe he was once a micro-preemie. Team SuperEmmett participates in the March for Babies every year and is usually one of the top fundraisers, turning out one of the biggest teams. “He is our superhero. He is the reason we march,” says Amanda.
