On Thanksgiving Day of 2016 at 24 weeks gestation, I woke up at 3 a.m. to what I thought was me needing a bathroom break but instead was rushed to the hospital. My water broke and the doctor told me that if I gave birth now, Lyric would only have a 15% chance of survival. I fought hard to keep Lyric in until December 1st when I became sick with an infection and I knew it was time to deliver. As I laid on the table, all of a sudden we heard a loud little cry, shocking us because we were told she wouldn’t be breathing. It was this moment that Lyric solidified her title as a fighter. The battle wasn’t over. I knew something was wrong as I was feeling unusual pain. On December 3rd, I woke up intubated in the ICU. My placenta had grown past my uterus and attached itself to my bladder. I was diagnosed with Placenta Percreta and it nearly cost me my life. Today, Lyric and I are almost at our 2 year survivor anniversary. Lyric spent 85 long days in the NICU defying all the odds stacked against her. She has no major health issues and is a happy healthy baby. I, myself have been in and out of the hospital due to health issues related to the surgeries on the day of her birth. However, we are here living life and thankful. We’ve both come a long way and we want to share our story in hopes that it raises awareness on Placenta Percreta and prematurity.
