Meet Our 2024 Ambassador Family

The Chester Family

The Chester Family is a March of Dimes family. Charlotte Chester was born prematurely at 33 weeks on February 8, 2022. This came as a surprise, as her due date coincided with Sam's birthday on March 29. Placenta Previa, a condition diagnosed early in the pregnancy due to bleeding, added complexity. While this condition is relatively rare, occurring in 1 out of 200 pregnancies, Kristin had experienced it with their first child, Grayson, without complications. However, the severity of Charlotte's case became apparent when Kristin had a significant bleed at only 25 weeks gestation. This led to a high-risk pregnancy with discussions of potential complications such as placental abruption and the need for a hysterectomy. Hospitalization became necessary after multiple significant bleeds, with the possibility of being admitted until delivery looming over me. Despite spending two weeks in the hospital, Kristin longed to be home, especially during the holiday season, away from her two-year-old son due to COVID protocols. Sam did his best to split his time and make the season magical, but it was a trying time for all. Eventually, Kristin was discharged with a stern warning from my doctor about the likelihood of further bleeding episodes. Charlotte's birth unfolded suddenly as Kristin experienced another hemorrhage while at the grocery store. Kristin was rushed to the hospital, where an emergency C-section was performed. Sadly Sam was not present due to timing and COVID restrictions. Charlotte arrived swiftly, but the experience was fraught with fear and uncertainty. Sam's arrival during the surgery brought a moment of joy as he revealed Charlotte's gender – a beautiful baby girl. However, the typical moments of bonding after birth were replaced by worry and concern as Charlotte was whisked away to the NICU. Kristin lost a significant amount of blood during the ordeal and faced a lengthy recovery period. The experience was harrowing, but Charlotte's resilience brought a glimmer of hope amidst the fear. The March of Dimes was there for them in ways they did not expect. "When we first entered the NICU to see Charlotte for the first time, a beautiful “Charlotte” banner and a goody bag were hanging in her room, all provided by March of Dimes," the Chester Family shares. "Inside the bag was a NICU onesie, a book, and a NICU care package with gift cards for food and coffee, crossword puzzles, and a few toiletries. Inside the care package was a note of encouragement from a fellow NICU mom who understood our struggles and fears. We continued to receive resources and information packets on how to care for our preemie baby- including what to do when we take our baby home. Charlotte was still in the NICU on Valentine's Day and received the cutest book and onesie to celebrate her first holiday. March of Dimes provided us with resources, encouragement, and a little joy during our darkest and scariest time as a family. The NICU can feel so isolating, but thanks to March of Dimes, we didn’t feel alone; we had a support system that understood our experience."
