Eight years ago, my son arrived six weeks early. Despite my background in public health and maternal health, nothing could have fully prepared me for the experience. In the NICU, I was struck by the lack of plain language and Spanish-language materials. It was an eye-opening moment that made me think of the countless families navigating this journey without clear information or the resources they need. I was lucky-- I was knowledgeable, I had support, and I was already part of a movement fighting for moms and babies. But even with all of that, the experience left a lasting impact on me.
That moment deepened my commitment to health literacy, health fluency, and plain language as core values in the work I do at March of Dimes. Every family deserves access to clear, actionable health information so they can advocate for themselves, ask the right questions, and be prepared when the unexpected happens. Empowerment starts with knowledge.
Preterm birth and maternal health crises continue to rise, and my commitment is stronger than ever. The funds raised support efforts to make life-saving information more accessible, ensure that every family gets the best possible start, and drive meaningful change in maternal and infant health.
