Hi everyone!
My name is Kinsley Cayden, and I just turned one this past January! Today, I want to share my journey with you.
Even before I entered this world, doctors discovered that I had Duodenal Atresia, a rare congenital condition where a blockage in the small intestine (the duodenum) prevents anything taken orally from passing through the digestive system. This meant that after birth, I wasn’t able to eat or drink like most newborns.
When I was just a week old, I underwent corrective surgery, and thankfully, everything went well. My surgeon told my family that cases like mine are incredibly rare—occurring in only 1 in 300,000 babies. Despite the success of the surgery, I developed an oral aversion due to spending an extended time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
As I neared the end of my third month in the NICU, doctors placed a G-tube in my tummy so I could receive the nutrition I needed and finally go home. After four months of getting stronger and healthier, I was officially discharged! My journey didn’t end there, though—I worked hard outside the hospital to regain my strength and learn how to eat and drink on my own.
Just before my first birthday on January 30th, I reached a huge milestone—I had my G-tube removed!
In support of March of Dimes, I want to raise awareness and share knowledge about the incredible support they provided to my family and me during my time in the NICU.
While I was fighting to grow stronger in the hospital, March of Dimes was there every step of the way, offering comfort, resources, and encouragement to my parents. They provided books so my family could read to me, creating special moments despite the challenges. They also took holiday photos since I couldn’t be home to celebrate, ensuring my family had precious memories to cherish. Additionally, they provided meals and self-care for my mommy, my parents dedicated all their time to being by my side.
Beyond these small yet meaningful gestures, March of Dimes reminded my family that they were not alone—that there was a whole community standing beside them, ready to support and uplift them during this difficult journey.
Now, I want to give back by spreading awareness of their mission and the impact they have on families like mine. 💜
With preterm birth rates continuing to rise, the U.S. remains among the most dangerous developed nations for childbirth, especially for women and babies of color.
At March for Babies™ you're lifting up communities, creating connections and taking action to make America a more equitable place and ensure that every mom and baby is healthy.
Together, we’re marching to raise funds and awareness to transform the health of all families!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
