My twin sons were born 12 weeks premature. Their prognosis was dire, doctors told us we may lose one of our babies or if they’re lucky enough to survive, our babies would be blind, severely cognitively impaired and suffer from chronic health problems for the rest of their lives.
It’s a little know fact that a portion of our donations to March of Dimes are used to fund doctors, research scientists and inventors who develop and patent cutting edge medical tools, devices, machines used in modern prenatal units to treat and extend the lives of premature infants. The March of Dimes also provided us with needed counseling to cope with the stress parents experience after the birth of a premature infant along with supplying us with an automatic breast pump, follow up visits and after care once our babies left the hospital.
Thanks to the amazing medical care provided by doctors and nurses at Beaumont Hospital’s (Royal Oak, MI) neonatal unit along with the timely assistance of the March of Dimes, my sons (now 27 years old) are thriving totally healthy, college educated working Engineers and proud brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
With preterm birth rates continuing to rise, the U.S. remains among the most dangerous developed nations for childbirth, especially for women and babies of color.
