Our 2017 Ambassador Leo Nortier
Our 2017 Ambassador Leo Nortier
Kim and Matt were thrilled when they found out they were expecting their first child. Kim, a labor and delivery nurse, knew what to expect, and did everything possible to give their baby the healthiest start possible. The two did not anticipate that anything would be wrong as they walked into Kim’s 35-week appointment, just one day after their baby shower.
Kim was diagnosed with preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication that causes 15% of premature births. As a nurse, Kim knew what was to come. She would be induced, given medications to prevent seizures, and most terrifying of all, she would have to deliver her baby early. After three long days, their son Leonard Matthew Nortier was born, weighing just 4lbs 3oz.
At less than 12 hours of age, Leo was admitted to Rochester General’s Special Care Nursery (SCN) for jaundice and poor eating. He was under phototherapy for 24 hours and remained in the SCN for feeding issues. Kim and Matt spent 14 days at home without their Leo.
Today, they are happy to report that Leo is a year and a half old, and very happy, and healthy! He’s met all of his milestones and is growing like a weed. Every time Kim and Matt see his face, his smile, hear his laugh, and feel his touch, they are reminded how fortunate they are, because not every preemie is as lucky.
